Claudia Kemfert is a German economics expert in the areas of Energy research and Environmental protection. She is a Professor of Energy Economics and Sustainability at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin. She heads the Energy, Transportation, and Environment department at German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). Her research focuses on the economic assessment of climate and energy policy strategies.
Claudia Kemfert is policy consultant, as well as member of numerous sustainability advisory boards and commissions. In the “High Level Group on Energy and Climate” she advised EU President José Manuel Barroso and collaborated with the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC). She is member in the scientific advisory board of WIFO, the Energy Institute of Linz/Austria, the Institute for Cultural Science in Essen as well as the EUREF Institute in Berlin.
From 1999 to 2000 she headed a research group at the Institute for Rational Energy Use at the University of Stuttgart. In 2000 she was invited to the University of Oldenburg as assistant professor, where she headed a research team until 2004. Claudia Kemfert held lectures at the University of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Siena.
She is member of several juries as the German Sustainability Prize as well as the German Environment Prize. She was awarded in 2006 as top German Scientist from the German research foundation, Helmholtz and Leibniz Association. In 2011 she was awarded with the Urania Medaille as well as B.A.U.M. environmental award for best science.

She is also the author of a book “Die andere Klima-Zukunft Innovation statt Depression “, her texts and studies have been published numerous popular scientific media and she is often invited as an expert in interviews on television and the radio.
