Luigi Datome
Former Basketball Champion
current executive of Olimpia Milano, and Head of Delegation and International Relations for the Italian Basketball Federation
Luigi “Gigi” Datome is one of the most enduring symbols of the Italian national basketball team and Olimpia Milano. His career began in Sardinia, where he made his debut in B2 at just 15 years old with Santa Croce Olbia.
After numerous experiences with prominent Italian clubs (Siena, Scafati, and Rome), he was in Rome when he exploded into the scene with a season as the league MVP, catching the attention of the NBA, where he signed with the Detroit Pistons.
Following an experience with the Boston Celtics, Gigi made the crucial decision to return to Europe, joining Fenerbahce under the guidance of the revered Obradovic. There, he became a cornerstone of a team built to win everything, from championships to cups and even an EuroLeague title.
In 2020, Gigi decided to return to Italy, joining the ranks of Olimpia Milano with Ettore Messina at the helm. In 2022, he added his second Italian championship to his achievements, repeating the success last year in 2023, once again against Bologna, and earning the MVP title in the finals.
He chose to conclude his career after the World Championships, wearing the blue jersey and captaining the national team with pride for over a decade.
Now, he is part of the management of Olimpia Milano, holding the position of Head of Delegation and International Relations for the Italian Basketball Federation.
